October’s demo was by artist Karen Thomas who works solely with graphite. She uses Seawhite bright smooth paper and graphite powder in a cloth to start on any work, using big movements to set down the initial shapes. Using only burnishers and blenders (from Derwent) and graphite pencils she creates very detailed pictures of animals. Her favourite thing was a graphite ball which is a soft, putty like substance which makes soft marks. All the whiskers she does by drawing them with a burnisher and that acts like a wax resist and allows other marks to be made over them.
